Our summer home is at the VFW Hall in Occoquan, VA:
204 Mill Street Occoquan, Virginia 22125 Our worship is a blend of contemporary and traditional music and liturgical forms with a focus on the preaching of the Word of God. Children are welcome and included in our worship, and a nursery is always available. Worship is followed by a time of refreshment and fellowship, wth Sunday School for all ages immediately afterward. All children's classes are taught by adult pairs, and Pastor David leads our adult class. [map] Ours is a three-fold mission: Worship: Praise of God, proclamation of His Word, and the celebration of the Sacraments are at the heart of what Redeemer is called to do. At the foundation of the life of the church is worship. God has called us into being to praise and glorify Him, to love Him and honor Him in all that we do. King David called upon Israel to "worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness" (1 Chronicles 16:29), while the Psalmist bids us "O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker!" (95:6) One of the best demonstrations of the divinity of Jesus is that He accepted the worship of those who recognized Him for who He is, the Son of the living God. In worship, even as we offer our homage to the Lord, He blesses us by renewing us, edifying us, instructing and inspiring us, that we may go into the world on His mission, in His name.
Small Groups: Cells will form disciples through the practice of the spiritual discipline of prayer and Bible study, through mutual accountability, and through service to others. In imitation of Christ's approach with the apostles, we are looking to small groups as the primary place for spiritual maturity to develop among our members and others. In small groups of about a dozen, people will have an opportunity to study the Scripture and grow in their understanding of God's revelation of Himself and His will. They will pray for one another in ways that only friends can. They will find a place where they can share their hurts and struggles, as well as their joys and praises. They will have the opportunity to serve others, in the company of people who share their heart for serving those whom God has created in His image. These groups will take lots of different forms--we currently have one that is a weekly Bible study, another that focuses on using crafts (including rubber stamping) to be of service to others--but all will have these forms elements of Bible study, prayer, mutual support, and service beyond the group.
Mercy: Meeting the physical, emotional, financial, relational, and spiritual needs of others, both in the greater Lorton area and world-wide, will enable us to share the good news of Christ with those whom we serve. The church is called to be in service to "the least of these my brethren." Just as the early church set aside deacons to help widows and orphans in need, we have deacons who are called to serve those in distress. But in addition to deacons, every member of Redeemer is called to some form of mercy ministry. It might be visiting those who need a friendly face and a listening heart (people in hospitals, nursing homes, prison; teenagers in trouble; folks struggling with addictions,etc.). It might be providing for physical needs such as food, clothing, or shelter. It might be working with people in crisis through a women's shelter or crisis pregnancy center. Some will be at home in Lorton or Woodbridge, some will be elsewhere in the United States, some will be overseas. There are countless ways for this to happen, and no limit on the opportunities that a needy world presents. You don't have to be a member of Redeemer, or even a Christian, to join us in this effort. If you've been given a heart for those in need, you're welcome to join us as we seek to spread God's healing throughout the land.
If this is a mission you'd like to explore, we invite you to join us. Download a printable copy of our brochure (9MB pdf) |
